Neurotensin is a unique gut peptide. It is a thirteen amino-acid peptide that is produced by the N cells of the ileal mucosa and which is also present in enteric nerves. It inhibits secretion of gastric acid, gastric emptying, and gastric mucosal blood flow; stimulates release of pancreatic bicarbonate and intestinal secretions; and increases intestinal motor activity. It remains unclear, however, whether these are physiological functions.
Neurotensin is released in response to mixed meals, particularly those with a high long-chain fatty acid content.
